Chapter Six
“England?!” I exclaimed. I was sitting on my bed, with Caleb standing, leaning against the wall near the door as he spoke to me. Rose was sitting beside me, playing with some of my clothes, putting on a few shirts and giggling because they were so big. I'd been talking to Caleb for half an hour about this; the NP wanted to send me to some place in England. There I would be cared for, for at least a few months. The Night Prowlers been informed of Alessandro Draco's memory loss, and wanted to work with him to help him recover what was lost. Since he apparently wasn't fit to protect me anymore, they'd assigned some British guy to do it until Draco could remember whatever in those nine years was so important to them. So nice that they'd decided to tell me. Losers, I said in my mind, I have to hear about this from Caleb. At least he was nice enough to tell me I had to leave beforehand. A thought struck me. “What will happen about Rose?” I wondered aloud.
“That's up to you,” Caleb said quietly. “If you want her to go, then you can take her. If you want her to stay here, then Margaret and I will take turns watching her.”
Thinking for a moment, I shook my head slowly. “I want her to be with me,” I decided. “But I don't understand why I have to go somewhere else.” It was hard to believe that I was actually starting to like it here.
“The NP wants to protect you. Draco is the best of the best, but at present is out of commission. They want you to be protected by the second best, if that's the case.”
I shook my head again, more wildly this time. “Sometimes I really don't understand the NP,” I muttered with a deep frown. “I don't need to be protected. If all I needed was protection, then I would have just stayed in the Kingdom, like Phoenix wanted me to.” Caleb ran his slim fingers through his short hair, a motion, I had noticed, he did when he was nervous. His red eyes flickered from me to Rose and then back. I glanced at my child. Now she was playing with her feet, wiggling her toes. I couldn't help but smile. Caleb opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, seemed to think better of it, and closed it again. “What?” I wondered.
“Nothing…” he murmured. “Never mind…” He didn't seem like it was completely nothing, but I decided to ignore it, giving him the benefit of doubt.
“So how come Draco's so happy when he thinks he's twenty-seven?” I wondered.
“It was before that happened,” he said, his tone changing dramatically. “When Desmond was experimented on with vampire and werewolf DNA.”
“I'm curious, what exactly happened then?”
“He almost died. Now, he's not human,” Caleb said, glancing warily at the door. “Desmond doesn't even know that himself.” He still thinks he's human? I wondered. Even with his advanced vision, smell, and hearing?
“How do you know all of this?” I pondered.
